MORE ON HALAL COSMETICS

Asslamo allaikum,

The readers of my blog are well aware that I am,nowadays, searching for brands that are halal(free from dead/not slaughtered animal ingredient or ingredients derived from pork). To make it simple for myself I was searching for brands which are vegan i-e free of animal based ingredients altogether. Now halal(permissible in Islam) and Vegan can be used as synonym sometimes, but there is more to it.

Vegan means absolutely NO animal based ingredients. This includes honey, beeswax and lanolin. These three ingredients are permissible for Muslims. So it is possible for make up to be non vegan but halal. This also broadens our choice range(as Muslims) a lot.

In my last post here,I listed vegan or partially vegan brands, but in today's post I will mention companies which don't use pork fat and use halal ingredients according to Muslim Consumer Group.(HERE).MCG is my only source in this regard, because only they have information regarding use of haram(not permitted in Islam) animal ingredients in Products. This is just the result of some independent research and no certification is involved.Right now,no international certification body  has tested ALL brands and categorized them. So,I am doing it for myself and my Muslim sisters.

والله أعلمُ بالـصـواب(Allah knows the right)

The list below does not specify brands which do not test on animals.MAC,Body shop and Lo'real are not cruelty free now.

With time as I come to know more about it,I will update the list insha Allah.
This website mentions the mainstream makeup brands in UK and their stance on cruelty free beauty or use of animal based ingredients. Here is the link.

1)-MAC:

According to MCG...
"No Pork fat is used in all MAC makeup products(December 2010, Ref. number 526005). . Look for cochineal, if present then it is not Halal".

Cochineal was discussed in previous post.It is made by crushing cochineal bug.The trade name listed on the product is Carmine/cochineal/Crimson Lake/Natural RedC.I. 75470/ oE120 on the label.Here.

So,I guess except for lipsticks and some blushes with cochineal MAC can be used.(a silent yey)

The reason you might not find MAC on halal list is that it is not cruelty free.

2)-THE BODY SHOP:

MCG says,

No animal derived ingredients are used according to Ethel 5058(December 2010), . Look for cochineal, if present then it is not Halal.

The company policy mentions they are vegetarians and against cruelty to animals. The parent
company L'oreal however is not cruelty free so obviously it affects Body shop's reputation too.

3)-REVLON:

All makeup products except Nail Polish Remover are free from animal derived ingredients.( 2010), look for cochineal, if there then not Halal

This article clears up Revlon's company policy on use of animal based ingredients.I am pleased to say that I can now use Revlon guilt free.

4)-VICTORIA SECRET:

Doesn't use animal based ingredients.

MCG:
"Victoria Secret brand of makeup are not made with pork or beef or any animal derived ingredients. No information on alcohol December 2010".

5)-L'OREAL

No pork or beef fat used.Only if cochineal present in some prodcut it is not halal.(DEC2010)

6)-GARNIER:

No pork fat or beef fat used in all products by garnier.

7)-MAYBELLINE:

No pork or beef fat used in Maybellin makeup (DEC 2010).Look for cochineal. If present then not halal.

8)-BURT BEE'S:

You will never find this one in a vegan list because of honey and wax and lanolin. They use natural products only.No animal based ingredients except honey, lanolin(sheep's oil gland secretion) and bees wax, which are halal.

[UPDATE:Products may contain carmine so read label before you buy.]

                BRANDS WHICH CONTAIN PORK FAT(HARAM):

Below are some brands easily available in Pakistan which have Pork fat.

1)-COVER GIRL:

Makeup products are made with pork fat or beef fat or vegetable fat. No guarantee for free of pork fat. R.No.06766738

2)-NEUTROGENA:

Pork fat is used in some Neutrogena Makeup products(December 2010).

Girls the word is "Makeup".The article didn't comment on face washes or body products.

3)-AVON:

Some products are made with pork fat and some products are Kosher(December 2010)

OLAY:

Oil of olay products are made with pork fat.

In the discussion above I have mentioned only popular or mainstream brands. If you need to know which other brands Muslim Consumer Group recommends you can check it here.      .

INTERNATIONAL VEGAN MAKEUP BRANDS/LINES,FREE FROM

ANIMAL INGREDIENTS AT SEPHORA:

I would also like to mention for the benefit of girls who like to shop online from ULTA and SEPHORA,a list of vegan brands at Sephora according to their admin. Here is the list of all the vegan skin, makeup and hair care brands at sephora.

Do you know what this means? The things I was about to throw out of my make up stash have been saved :-D I have seen some Muslims who are vegans and support veganism(in food).Well this is wrong, because in Quran Allah has specifically commanded to not to declare things haram, which have been made halal for us.

I have updated my previous post regarding vegan brands and vegan lines in some brands. It includes more brands now.HERE.The information about it has been taken directly from the official website or via Email.

You can also visit this blog,Muslimah's musings. The blogger has made a list of halal brands too.I stumbled across her work while researching and thought you will find this useful.

I sincerely hope my efforts have made the choice a little easy for you.You see all your Favourite brands can still be used by you but with a little more awareness and knowledge you can choose halal makeup in budget.
I would love to hear about your thoughts on the subject.Do share the names of any more halal brands that you know or have tried. If you have any objections or questions regarding the post just let me know and I will be happy to address them.

Have a great and virtuous weekend.xoxo

    1. it is not neccasary that they use posrk fat in each and every product but it is company's policy to use animal ingredients. They take it from non zabiha beef or pork. These two are not allowed for muslims.so it is better to avoid the doubtful cases and use an alternative.

      Delete
    2. If you read the label you will find stearyl alcohal or stearic acid or its salt. This is derived from fat so is glycerin. These are the things to avoid.I have searched and uptil now i have found Neutrogena Naturals facewash range.Cetaphil is great too.Now I to find a brand available in Pakistan.

    1. Body shop is not considered strictly vegan because L'Oreal(the parent company) does animal testing otherwise TBS do not use animal derived ingredients.so its halal as per their claims.I have mentioned this in the post dear.

  11. Copy paste from MCG :

A sister has provided a e-mail to MCG from The Body Shop Company (reference Number 63461) where company claimed to use gelatin either from pork or non zabiha beef, Shellac which might be dissolved in alcohol. The Body Shop products are not recommended to be use by Muslims. March 17, 2013

So which one is true...previous body shop claim as vegetarian...hmmmm...love body shop hu hu

    2. Regarding body shop, I copy paste from MCG website...but then the official website of The BOdy Shop still claim they are 100% vegetarian...hmmm

      Delete
    3. But then did MCG really check on the letter sending by a sister claimed from the body shop...or is it just a scam or sabotage...as we know TBS all over the world claim their products as vegan and get support from so many vegan from all over the world...I don't think they want to betray their client trust on this. Really hope MCG to check on this direct with TBS. Islam also not allow us to believe with rumours or hearsay after all.

    5. As per Shar'iah if there is any doubt with regards to the halal permissibility of an item one should obstain.
Remember it's the onus of every single muslim to ensure that the products and items we use and consume are halal. Limbs that consume halal will automatically do good and the contrary (Hadith to this effect).

I have my doubts with regards to The Body Shop because as of 2012 the are not animal testing/cruelty free. However PETA Friendly signs and certificates are still displayed on all the shop windows and in shops.

Another thing is products could be vegan and vegetarian but if they contain alcohol or if alcohol was used in the manufacturing process (eg to clean/sterilise production lines etc) the products will not be halal. Most companies cannot guarantee this.

It's so frustrating because a lot of times the companies and respentatives themselves cannot guarantee as they do not have sufficient knowledge and halal inspectors are not given access to actually conduct tests and or verify the truth behind what is told as most of the information obtained is from email correspondence.

  14. i would just like to add that although a product may be vegan, it still might have traces of alcohol. you have to research the ingredients: that's exactly what I have done and unfortunately I have found many products which do have a percentage of alcohol in it: small or not I do not think it would be permissible.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Asslamoallaikum. Thank you so much for contributing dear :) .I have discussed the problem of alcohol in products in my previous post(link already mentioned in this one). For you I am posting the link below:
    http://prettypeachyandpink.blogspot.com/2013/03/muslimahs-makeuptrying-to-solve-dilemma.html

Do take a look.Alcohal is haram, but not najas(meaning that if it doesn't reach intoxicating levels in products which are meant to be used on skin it is alright to use )[references and discussion link mentioned].In absence of an international halal certification body vegan is our best bet.Allah knows best.

    1. Wallaikum Asslam Nabila. The first two paras of my post answer your question in detail.Actually vegan means free from animal based ingredients. So I think in a world where there isnt an international halal certification body we can use vegan products with a peace of mind that they are free from all animal ingredients( halal or haram). So,yes in a way vegan can be called halal.

    2. Assalamualaykum. Nice post, alhamdulillah. I wanna ask, if the cosmetic is the vegan one, is it any possibility that they use ethanol/ethyl alcohol for the flavour or fragrance or hidden solvent? Now I'm eyeing on aromi liquid lipstick because it is vegan (>_<) But I heard that it has something like cupcakes or vanilla flavour, so how is your opinion? Jazakallahu khair for the answer :-)

I know what you mean dear.Pakistani hain na hum to yeh masail blkul hain.Companies and retailers lie about their products. However, this thing is not possible in west. They have very strict laws for fake claims.Do you know what can happen if a consumer finds out that company has put false info on their label? There is a law suit and company loses billions along with its reputation. Its too risky for them.So either they dont make public claim about them being vegan or they make sure that they are.The companies I mentioned in the previous post are certified vegan. However out of the companies mentioned in this post burt bee, revlon and body shop are halal.MAC and maybellin were included here because of recommendation by muslim consumer group which is run by a muslim scholar and has an extensive researched data base.

Ok as for pork fat in Avon products they have it in some products.(Read my post above). When you know that a company uses pork fat in "some" products can you gaurantee what those "some" products are?can you give us a list of those "some" products? If you want to avoid pork fat for Allah's will isnt it better to avoid that doubtful area altogether? If you can not avoid AVON then do contact the company and ask them about the "pork free" products.Do share the reply with us too because as far as my blog is concerned I could not find information contradicting presence of pork fat in Avon products whether its some or all.Fat is the base of most products in cosmetic industry so you can well imagine how hard it would be to put pork fat in some products while using other fat sources for other products.I hope you understand what I am trying to say here.Allah knows best

    1. yes Urband Decay has a clear vegan policy. The vegan products are marked with a paw in ingredient list.which means it does not contain halal or haram animal ingredients at all.You can look for the tab "VEGAN' on the website to find vegan safe products

  55. MAC is totally indecisive, i emailed them about russian red twice and each time i got a different reply. First they said it HAS carmine, then i sold my lipstick in exchange of girl about town. I emailed them again, this time about both these lipsticks. They said Russian Red DOES NOT have carmine but girl abut town has it. I am so disappointed in MAC, but i'm gonna continue using my GaT cuz i have played my part, Allah knows rest.

  56. However, MAC said that they do not use beef/pork fat. Similarly, upon inquiring I found out that Maybelline and NO7 do not use beef/pork fats in their products as well. Rimmel and bourjois have still not replied.

    1. I published the labello post before i started working on halal makeup so i do not know for sure dear. :) However it is from germany and EU has developed a policy of discouraging use of animal ingedients on their products so lets hope for the best.As for now i only mention the makeup under halal catgeory if I am very sure about it

  67. WHO CARES??!!!! GEEZ!! You women need to stop letting your religion impose so MANY restrictions on your. The Supreme Being upstairs (God, Jesus, Allah, Ram, Yahweh) doesn't care whether you use non-Halal products on your skin or whether you eat the same. Spend your time and energy in helping the poor and unfortunate souls all over the world. More importantly, keep questioning yourself, "why are there so many restrictions for women and the men walk around free as birds?" Ladies, always be questioning. God gave you a brain. Demand freedom and equality and don't blindly accept everything.

    1. The spirit of Islam encompasses helping the poor and unfortunate souls as well helping your inner self. The restrictions are there for a reason.A law abiding citizen understands the importance of law for harmony in society much more then a lawless one.
As far as the use of dead animals is concerned the law is same for MEN and WOMEN.Muslims are not allowed to use parts of dead animals in trade of any kind.Except the resource able ones.
Do you ever question the philosophy behind vegan ism???I think not.Its only the Muslims and Islam that are targeted without properly understanding the rational behind a certain law.
Taking a sexist approach really proves the lack of any solid logic on your part.Do use YOUR own brain and don't accept what media is feeding you

  76. SO many make up cosmetics and body, hair colour ect contain ALOCHOL so we must look out for this the toxic alcohols include ethanol but there are fatty alcohols that are permissible as they are not true alcohols, Don't just look for animal free products but also Alcohol free products.
