BURNS FIRST AID AT HOME

Asslamoallaikum girls,

Its ramazan and all the housewives have to cook a gourmet meal twice daily now :-) In all that hurry and fuss, you can somtimes burn your hand or scald your finger with hot oil. So,I thought I should do a post on the fist aid and management of burns.

Lets start with a burn kit. Here is how it should be.

In addition to the regular first aid items, the kit should have:

1)-One pair of gloves

2)-Water jel or burn gel(comes in botttles or sachets)
3)-Water Gel dressing
4)-Non adhesive bandages (in small and large sizes)
5)-Scissors
6)-Burn cream(contianing silver sulphdiaiazene e-g Silvadene,Flam off 1%)
7)-Cold compress
8)-adhesive tape to secure bandage
9)-Normal saline in case of a chemical burn
10)-Panadol
11)-Benadryl,Avil or other Over the counter antihistamine

Now,before treating the burn we need to know the type. There are four types:

FIRST DEGREE BURNS:
They appear red skin without blisters. These are superficial and will not leave a scar if properly treated.

HOW SHOULD MOM HANDLE MINOR ACCIDENTS AT HOME

A few days back  son jumped from bed and hit his head on the sharp edge. This resulted in deep laceration on left eyebrow and of course heavy bleeding.I was about to pass out at the sight of my baby's injury and blood, when I got hold of my senses and managed the case.Afterwards I thought that I must share the management plan in case of such accidents(which are frequent)with other mums.

First of all keep a First Aid kit ready at home.Below is what you First Aid Kit should contain:

                                       FIRST AID KIT AT HOME

DETAILS
WOUND DRESSING:Bandage, gauze, antiseptic ointments, band aid(sunnyplast in Pakistan), adhesive tape
ICE PACK:To control and stop bleeding.
IPECAC SYRUP: A syrup to induce vomiting in case your child ingested something poisonous or    dangerous.
TWEEZERS:For the purpose of picking glass out of wound in injury with broken glass or to pick out sting in insect bite.
ALCOHAL WIPES:To clean the bruised area.

Now,lets discuss some scenarios and possible interventions:

Take A Moment To Remember The Father Of Pakistani Nation

Today is 25th of December. This date is very important for me and all the citizens of

Pakistan. Not because its christmas, but because its the birth anniversary of Quaid-e-

azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah.

It really pains me to see that many of us tell our children about santa and christmas, but

leave the history of our country to school teachers. We never bother to tell our

children the great story of a great man.We never wish our children to be like

Muhammad  Ali Jinnah. We never take time to tell them what magic that thin, frail man

worked to get us this beautiful country named Pakistan.

ARE YOU FEEDING YOUR BABY IN A TOXIN FREE FEEDER

Every mother loves her baby and wants the best for her.We always want to make safe choices

for our children to keep them away from any possible harm.In every household with

babies, feeding bottles or feeders are used. But,did you ever realize that you might be feeding

toxins to your baby through the feeding bottle.Horrifying concept..Isn't it?But what you don't

know is that so many mums in Pakistan are doing just this by choosing feeders that contain

BPA.

WHAT IS BPA?

STRUGGLING WITH NAUSEA IN PREGNANCY

Google images

The other day  I was watching a F-R-I-E-N-D-S  re-run and Jennifer Aniston was

telling her friend what to expect as her pregnancy progresses.

She said,"Your feets will swell, your ass will get bigger...**sniff**..my GOd its such a

magical time".I laughed real hard on this.

NO doubt pregnancuy is a magical time.Nature chooses you to nurture a miracle. You

become a doorway between spiritual and mortal world and bring a soul in this world.A

new human being.A new member of the family and society. But,all the mums would

agree that the road to this greatness is not easy.

I went through all the annoying and at times painful symptoms but the most difficult

time for me was the first trimester.Morning Sickness and nausea all day long. This

condition made me hate everything around me.I hated the sight and smell of

food.Even the sight of Tea,my special cup of happiness, revolted me.

FEEDING FUSSY KIDS

Nowadays every other mum is complaining about shrinking stomachs and small

appetitie of their kids.Especially difficult to tackle are preschoolers(age between 2 to

3 years). They are very very choosy. Also their "schedules" are too busy to remember

eating properly. All they want is play and fun.The second they get an inkling that you

are seriouse in feeding them, they make a run for it.

Well,as a mum of a naughty preschooler,I have a lot of experience of hearing,"NO,I

wont eat".Also my kid sister had a problem of "Hare like appetite".So,I always saw my

mum struggling  with her.Whenever she assigned me that task,I hated it.

However, from all those years and now,I have learned only one thing. We should not

treat our kid's stomach as an adult's.We need to take a careful and special approach

towards it.

SAY NO TO POISON IN YOUR MAKEUP AND SKINCARE

I love makeup. All girls do. Some love it more .Recently, while shopping online I came across this campaign for safe cosmetics. I just couldn’t dismiss it as overcautious attitude towards cosmetics.

You have to use the cosmetics everyday. No one wants lead poisoned lipsticks or toxins in their systems.

Yet,according to a study conducted in the US 16 toxic chemicals like phthlates, triclosan and musks were found in urine, blood samples of teenage girls. These chemicals cause cumulative toxicity and cause so many fertility problems.Parabens have been related with breast cancer.

Solid Food For your Baby

Thinking up healthy, nutritious recipes for less then 8 months old is really tough.I mean they are going through transition from liquid to solid. Most of food products containing allergens are restricted. You are left with vegetables ,fruits and pulses. It does take a lot of imagination to think up of tasty recipes that you can use to make delicious paste your baby would love.

Today I will share some recipes that I have tried and baby loves them.

Here is a list of permitted/ recommended food products according to baby’s age.

Colick And Hunger problem... My solution

Every mother has the dreadful experience of handling a colicky baby. The sleepless

nights, the incessant crying and mounting frustration, was too much for my lacerated

nerves.

In all such times there was this one thing I could always rely on….Gripe water.

The first gripe water was formulated in England in1851 and used by English

nannies.Gripe water was discovered accidentally by William Woodward,an American

doctor working in England, while treating fen fever and malaria.

He observed that the medicines used in these diseases also helped sooth down a fussy

baby. Gripe water  quickly adopted as a prescription by physicians

                               WOODARD'S GRIPE WATER:

Sodium bicarbonate is the primary ingrediant along with dill and fennel oil. Its

effectivity is questioned by physicians nowadays but I find it really effective.

PROPERLY SHAPING THE HEAD OF NEWBORN BABY

Ok…all the Pakistani moms know that head shaping is a BIG deal in Pakistan.

When my first one was born, everyone used to examine my boy’s head, to see how

well I was shaping it. At times, during the first 6 months, I was sooo exasperated, I

used to stay up all night re-positioning his head. However, when my girl was born I had

the hang of it and did with comparative ease, but it was still no piece of cake.

OVER THE COUNTER TREATMENTS AVAILABLE FOR ACNE IN PAKISTAN:

as a teenager there were days when I would get up and wouldn't want to look my self in
the mirror.reason…acne.I have a very oily skin and suffered from acne since I was13.

It took me  a total of 9years to become completely free of acne but I still have to take some steps to keep it at bay.

In my battle against acne I tried many product.Today I have decided to share some of the effective ones with you.

SLEEP AND BABIES

My baby girl  likes to sleep more than her brother ever did. Here is some info I found on baby sleep.

How much sleep baby needs(source:)

AgeNighttime SleepDaytime Sleep *Total Sleep
1 month88 (inconsistent)16
3 months105 (3)15
6 months113 1/4 (2)14 1/4
9 months113 (2)14
12 months11 1/42 1/2 (2)13 3/4
18 months11 1/42 1/4 (1)13 1/2
2 years112 (1)13
3 years10 1/21 1/2 (1)12
*Note: number of naps

As the child grows his sleep time  will be reduced and you will get even less time for yourself.

PERSONAL EXPERIENCE:

After having gone through it myself i can not stress the importance of a good sleep routine enough. Its very very very important for the baby and for the parents as well.

You see babies have more trouble going to sleep then adults so if you try to put them to bed soon after play all you will get is a tantrum throwing baby...and may be a few kicks and a lot of hair pulling.(trust me I know what I am talking about).Out of sheer exhaustion I tried to do that when my girl was born, that is  putting toddler to sleep without the preliminaries and every night,we both went to sleep crying ,big fat tears rolling down our cheeks...pathetic huh.

Then,I tried to adjust his routine by trying these new methods:

1..Reduced his day time nap to 2 hrs instead of usual three.

2.Got very punctual about his day nap.At four pm he went to sleep and woke up at six.

3. At least TWO hours before bed time I switch off the tv(the hard part for me).

4.Dim lights and no activity.Parents just pretend to sleep.

And there you have  a full of energy toddler toned down to  angelic sleep.

The most important point is that there should be NO toys in the bedroom and if there are SMUGGLE them out unnoticed. From the above mentioned episode I learnt that you can not reason with a two year old and you most certainly can not make him do something.

So, all you can do is create an environment of control and discipline(something my babies taught me).Babies love routine and here lies your luck.Sweet dreams.
